Single Song Poster Series:

The overall concept of the project is to create three separate posters of different Kpop groups that look like a cohesive series. Instead of doing an overall band poster I wanted to hone in on each groups unique concepts through individual songs. Through this project I also wanted to show off my illustration and printmaking skill.

Deliverables

Kpop Inspiration

K-pop, abbreviated colloquial term for popular music from South Korea. K-pop is typically used to describe “idol music” made by artists trained by entertainment companies to become pop music stars.” (Britannica)

A concept is the overarching theme that a group or individual artist follows. It influences the musical style and often even determines the image of the artists. The concept also affects the song lyrics, the style of the music videos and the outfits.

My Process

  • Started with illustrating familiar iconography from each music video in my own unique way

  • Simplified color palettes to lesson the burden of screen printing

  • Wanted to show 3 completely different group concepts that could work together through layout and style

XG – GALA

XG’s group concept blends futuristic style with confident, genre-fluid music, highlighting a powerful girl-crush image rooted in hip-hop and R&B influences.

For the song GALA, the girls are dressed in ultra lavish outfits crashing the met gala. They are like aliens coming out of the galaxy.

illit – jellyous

ILLIT embodies a bright, whimsical girl-group concept that feels both modern and gently nostalgic.

For the song jellyous, the girls are dressed in very Y2K inspired outfits and there are multiple points of reference such as a Nintendo DS
and a Wii.

CORTIS embodies a “break the boundaries” concept —
a self-producing crew that “colors outside the lines”, creating music, choreography and visuals on their own terms.

Cortis – FaSHioN

For the song FaSHioN, the boys are dressed in fashionable outfits singing about thrifting and wearing vintage.

Final Thoughts

What I learned from this project was how to simplify my illustrations in order to print. I also learned more about setting up my designs to be similar layouts but still have their own theme. Setting up files for registration in screen printing was also a learning curve.
